Tina Mewhinney holds a B. S. in chemistry from Mary Washington College
and a M. S. in chemistry from Texas Woman's University. She is a
Professor of Chemistry at Eastfield College of the Dallas Community
College District where she uses elements of process oriented guided
inquiry in teaching both organic and general chemistry. As the Program
Coordinator for chemistry at Eastfield she is experienced in motivating
and training other faculty to utilize student centered pedagogy and has
made presentations and coordinated workshops at national meetings
concerning her work in this area. She developed and uses a system of
wireless networked tablet PC’s to increase student engagement in her
POGIL classroom. She serves on the Steering Committee of the NSF-funded
POGIL Project, and she is involved in a FIPSE grant to develop and study
large-class POGIL, and a research study on the POGIL pedagogy’s
effectiveness. She is the 2003 recipient of the Miles Production
Excellence in Teaching award and the 1996 Excellence in Teaching award
while teaching part-time at Brookhaven College.
