Sally Hunnicutt is an Associate Professor and the Assistant Chair of the VCU Department of Chemistry. She earned her B.A. in chemistry at Duke University, her M.S. in chemistry at the University of Utah, and her Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Cincinnati. She teaches general and physical chemistry; collaborates with Dr. Sarah Rutan on research into chemical factors controlling solvation; partners with Dr. Suzanne Ruder in running an NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates/Teachers program; and manages course scheduling and advising for the VCU Department of Chemistry. Sally is the PI on a U.S. Department of Education Title III Strengthening Institutions grant titled PRISM: Producing Results in Science and Mathematics; the grant aims to improve outcomes for students taking introductory-level chemistry, biology, and math courses. Since attending a POGIL workshop in 2003, Sally has worked with colleagues to implement POGIL principles in general chemistry and organic chemistry and has used POGIL to teach general chemistry, physical chemistry (for chemistry and for forensics majors) and the chemistry-major senior seminar course.
